History

1993

The “Visual Communication Interest Group” is founded at the ICA conference in Washington, D.C. (Steering committee: Kevin Barnhurst, Michael Griffin, Larry Gross)

2002

Divisional status for the interest group is proposed at the ICA Executive Board meeting in Seoul, Korea

2004

The now “Visual Studies Division” is granted divisional status after maintaining a level of 200 members for 2 years

2009

The division’s name is changed into “Visual Communication Studies Division” to regain the focus on communication instead of visual culture
