| New Fund Created to Honor Legacy of ICA Past President |

| The passing of former ICA president Dr. Klaus Krippendorff in October 2022 was a significant blow to this community in which he loomed so large. In addition to the official services for his passing, he was honored at ICA23 in Toronto with a lovely, intimate memorial during which friends, family, and colleagues shared their memories of this icon of the field and wonderful, caring man. ICA is honored, now, to announce that the Klaus Krippendorff Memorial Travel Grant Fund has just been established (October 2023) to honor his legacy, impact, and decades of service to both ICA and the communication field as a whole. The fund will provide support for ICA annual conference travel to a promising Global South student in the field of Visual Communication—long considered Klaus’ “home” Division at ICA, though his influence was felt across the association. The fund was created by a generous donation from Dr. Krippendorff’s estate and gifted into ICA’s safekeeping by his wife Dr. Margaret Thorell and children Heike Sullivan and Kaihan Krippendorff, who will serve as trustees of the fund along with the current chair of the Visual Communication Division (currently Dr. Saumava Mitra). We express our heartfelt thanks to the Krippendorff family for entrusting ICA with this honor. Those who wish to donate to the Krippendorff Fund may contact Saumava Mitra, VCS Chair for more information. |
The Klaus H. Krippendorff Memorial Travel Grant Fund has great potential to make a difference for students and emerging scholars and early career professionals from Tier B/C countries (per ICA) wishing to attend the annual ICA conferences. If you are interested in applying for the fund, watch out for our call for applications annually (at least 2 months before the annual ICA conference).
If you would like to contribute to growing the fund for the benefit of future Visual Communication Studies Division members, please follow the link below that will open a secure donation form via the ICA website.
(Donations are tax-deductible in the U.S.)
